Q3 2016: INDUSTRY REPORT

On-Premise Trends: Traffic to the On-Premise declined -2.8% year-over-year during the four-weeks ending 10/2/16 - in line with the previous four-week period through 9/4/16. Traffic was slightly below the 52-week trend (-2.7%), but above the 12-week (-3.3%) and 24-week (-3.4%) trends.

Total Alcohol: Total Alcohol units declined -3.8% during the period, also slightly improved from the 12-week trend (-4.1%) and but below longer trends (-3.5%, 52-week).

On-Premise Trends: Traffic fell -3.3% year-over-year during the four weeks ending 7/10/16. While the On-Premise channel remains soft, the period was an improvement from traffic declines persisting since March. The latest four weeks exceeded the rolling 12 week trend (-3.6%) and were on par with the rolling 24 week trend (-3.2%).

Total alcohol unit growth benefitted from the small improvement – increasing to -3.5% from -4.0% (12-week) and -3.8% (24-week).

Beer: Beer units fell -5.0%

On-Premise Trends: On-Premise traffic slumped during the four-weeks ending 3/20/16 – down -4.4% from the previous year. January storms and a slow St. Patrick's/March Madness season have contributed to a weak start to 2016 – with traffic down -2.2% through the first 12 weeks versus +0.2% a year ago. 

Total alcohol units were down -5.4% - pulled down by the Beer category (-8.0%).

Beer: Beer units were the hardest hit during the period, down -8.0%, while total alcohol units declined by -5.4%.

ON-PREMISE TRENDS END THE YEAR ON A LOW NOTE, CRAFT SPIRITS BIG WINNER IN 2015

  • After a strong start to 2015 (+3% in January), traffic trends for the on-premise channel moderated and remained weak through the rest of the year (-1.2% FY15). Last year’s World Cup created tough summer comps, and holiday timing dampened traffic during the latest 4 week period (-2.6% through 12/27).

  • Share changes between alcohol beverage categories: Beer unit share was down -1.1 ppts during the latest 4 weeks, in line with full year losses (down -1.0 ppts FY15). Wine share was flat throughout 2015 (0.0 ppts), while spirits picked up share (+1.0 ppts during December, +0.9 ppts for FY15).
